JD Long Masonry is a leading masonry contractor committed to excellence, quality, and safety on every project. We are seeking an experienced, dedicated, and driven EH&S Director to join our team of professionals working on big and exciting masonry commercial construction projects.

General Responsibilities

Responsible for fostering and consistently seeking to improve the J.D. Long Safety Culture. Identifying KPI’s designed to measure and evaluate the impact of this safety culture and making periodic reports on levels of performance against established benchmarks; developing and executing annual operating plans for the safety and loss prevention function; presenting information and coaching team members on the fundamentals of sound safety and loss prevention policies, practices and behaviors; communicating and collaborating with members of the executive management, as well as management and team members throughout the company; supporting and insuring adherence to all company core values, operating and regulatory compliance policies and practices.

Essential Duties

  • Performs a variety of duties to foster and continually improve the JD Long safety culture and support the operational performance of all team members against established safety and loss prevention benchmarks, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Develops, implements, and monitors corporate safety and loss prevention programming, including policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Creates and delivers ongoing training sessions and “toolbox” meetings designed to provide instruction on critical aspects of safety and loss control programming and to foster a deeply embedded culture.
  • Provides orientation and training on safety programming and expectations to new team members during the initial stages of employment.
  • Facilitates the development of safety, loss prevention, and environmental health hazard key performance indicators (“KPIs”) and establishes benchmarks and targets for each KPI; consistently measures corporate and organizational unit performance against these benchmarks and makes regular reports to appropriate levels of management.
  • Identifies areas of risk for safety and environmental hazards and aggressively pursues measures to mitigate these risks.
  • Conducts and documents project safety and health inspections; completes and documents thorough investigations of safety or environmental accidents and injuries, takes appropriate action relating to these events, and puts in place initiatives to correct deficiencies in policy, practice, training, equipment, etc.
  • Accompanies team members on initial visit to panel physicians and follows up with additional visits, as necessary.
  • Coordinates with site Safety Managers, Safety Coordinators, or other appropriate levels of oversight, the issuance and effective utilization of personal protective equipment, safety materials, first aid supplies, safety signs, protective clothing and equipment and other resources supporting a safe and healthy work environment; posts and maintains current safety documents and literature.
  • Maintains project OSHA 300 log of injuries and illnesses; maintains appropriate certifications, e.g., OSHA 500, 501, 502.
  • Manages all Workers’ Compensation claims by investigating the circumstances of the claimed injury fairly and objectively, while seeking to minimize fraud and loss; takes actions to prevent reoccurrence and creates effective “back-to-work” programs.
  • Facilitates all government safety inspections for designated locations and responds promptly, in coordination with facility management, to inquiries and inspections by loss control service provider or government agency (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT, Insurance Carrier, etc.); coordinates responses and compliance with requirements of inspection reports from company insurance carrier.
  • Develops overall view of safety and loss prevention costs, provides peer group comparisons, and provides budgets and reports, as requested.
  • Provides guidance, support, and oversight to various individuals/positions throughout the company who may have particular accountability and opportunities to influence the safety culture and performance against established benchmarks.
  • Researches, recommends, implements, and maintains efficient and effective systems, equipment, materials, etc. that have the potential to enhance the safety culture and improve working conditions for team members and subcontractors, including safety training.
  • Communicates with all levels of management and team members throughout the company to integrate goals and activities.
  • Oversee the management of the company’s fleet of vehicles, including driver safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Education & Training: B.S. or B.A. degree in a related field; specific training and education focused on safety and loss prevention (First Aid/CPR, OSHA 500); CSP, ASP, or CHST preferred, or ability to achieve.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in safety and loss prevention positions; experience in the construction industry is preferred.

  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar and analytical skills; strategic visioning and planning abilities; proficient interpersonal relations; coaching and presenting information; proficient work management and supervisory skills; entrepreneurial drive and motivation to efficiently and effectively achieve corporate safety and loss prevention plans and objectives; demonstrated decision-making and problem solving skills; proficient computer and technology skills; visual and auditory skills; valid driver's license; Bilingual a plus

Physical Demands

  • Physical demands are minimal but may occasionally involve some light lifting, walking, reaching, etc.

Work Environment

  • The work environment varies between office settings, various and frequent outside locations, job sites, and travel settings.
