Water Meter Reader/LaborerHawaiian Beaches Water Company, Inc.POSITION AVAILABLEHawaiian Beaches Water CompanyWe are seeking a motivated and qualified individual to assist in meter reading and maintenance of a small (1100 service connections) public water system. Applicant must have valid Hawaii drivers license.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is an entry level position. This class is flexibly staffed and will receive systematic on-the-job training. Incumbents of this class perform the tasks necessary to perform monthly meter reading, assist maintain and operate Hawaiian Beaches Water System. Work is performed according to established procedures or specific oral or written instruction. Changes in procedures or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDGeneral supervision is provided by the Operations Manager and Distribution System Operator.Operations Manager or DSO may provide technical and functional supervision.EXAMPLES OF DUTIESEssential Duties:The following duties are considered essential for this job classification:Accurately read water meters utilizing a PDA in all weather conditionsUse a PDA Handheld device for meter readingHand dig for extended periods to expose water linesWalk for extended periods and repeatedly lift meter box lidsInspect meters, meter boxes and valves to document and report any malfunction or tamperingAssist with skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of water production, treatment and delivery systemsAssist with installation, troubleshoot, repair and replace underground water mains and service laterals, using basic plumbing tools, tapping machine, pipe cutters, threader, reamer, pipe wrenches and assorted pneumatic and hydraulic toolsAssist with installation of water meters and meter boxesfollow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions; determine and set up safe work zone traffic control and maintain a safe work environmentAssist with repair of streets and sidewalks after utility maintenance work is completedWork in confined space environment such as holesMaintain records of work performed;Perform repairs and maintenance on company vehicles and equipmentOperate weed eater and chainsawOperate plate compactor and jack hammerMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of and Skills: Proper use of technology required to perform meter reading.Proper use of equipment, tools, material and methods used in underground water distribution or installation maintenance and repair.Abilities: Repeatedly enter and exit a vehicle, walk quickly for long distances, repeatedly lift meter box covers and accurately record meter readings.Repeatedly lift shovels full of earth or debris, some heavy lifting up to 100 pounds; set up and remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects; use common hand tools, such as a hammer, saw, drills, wrenches, screwdriver or similar tools; learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation; perform heavy manual labor under adverse working conditions; understand and carry out oral and written directions in order to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner; read and understand work orders, diagrams, and maps; take basic measurements of pipes or spaces; use various hand and power tools, such as a chain saw, jackhammer, sprayer, hydraulic snap cutter, power saw and concrete saw; fill out work orders and daily logs of work performed; communicate and get along with the public and co-workers in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting; climb ladders or steps to reach objects; dig up ground for ditches using pick, shovel, spade or other tools; learn job related material through structured lecture and reading.Physical requirementsFrequently lift up to 75lbsFrequently carry up to 10lbsContinuously stand and walk during shiftFrequently kneel and bend during shiftRemain out doors in all weather conditions during shiftOccasionally climb laddersFrequently push and pull objectsCoordinate eye, hand and foot movement to safely operate and frequently enter and exit a vehicleTolerate regular contact with fire ants and other pestsExperience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience Meter reading, Data collection, Maintenance work, Plumbing or pipe fitting etc. Education - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.LICENSE OR CERTIFICATEThis classification requires the use of a vehicle during work hours. In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess and maintain throughout employment a valid, Class A, Hawaii driver's license. .WORKING CONDITIONSThe work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements, fire ants, loose dogs, heavy traffic, noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, airborne particles, noxious odors, grease, oil, cleaning chemicals, solvents and spills. Incumbents carry objects such as 90-pound bags of cement, 90-pound jack hammers and 80-pound meter boxes distances of 20 feet or less; move objects weighing 50 pounds, such as, sand bags and tampers, distances over 20 feet. Directing traffic involves making continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements. Various maintenance tasks involve bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time. Loading debris tools, equipment and pipes into trucks and working in trenches require lifting arms above shoulder level.Duties often include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Assignments include work in small cramped areas such as manholes and trenches. Operators may be called out for emergency work at night, on weekends or holidays.COMPENSATION$15-$20/hr.Vehicle and tools needed to perform all required task will be provided by Hawaiian Beaches Water Company.
