Project Engineer

As a Senior Project Engineer with the City of Leawood, you are an integral part of improving and making a difference in the lives of those here and in surrounding communities. You will be the senior project manager for several highly anticipated projects, which may include the reconstruction of 83rd Street and 123rd Street, pedestrian, signal, and pavement improvements along State Line Road, and many more.

  • Are skilled in building relationships and finding common ground among multi-disciplinary teams, including developers, consultants, contractors, residents, and city leaders.

Your work responsibilities may include: 

  • Leading major capital projects' design, development, and construction, including transportation, utility, drainage, and facility improvements.
  • Mentoring project engineers and technical staff.
  • Developing project scopes, schedules, budgets, and procurement documents.
  • Coordinating closely with internal departments, regulatory agencies, contractors, and the community to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Reviewing and approving plans, specifications, change orders, and reports with attention to quality, risk, and long-term resilience.
  • Representing the city at public meetings, City Council presentations, and interagency collaborations.
  • Championing sustainability, equity, and safety across all phases of engineering projects.
  • Assisting with review and approval of right-of-way and easement permits. 

Minimum Requirements:  A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited engineering school with eight (8) years of progressive engineering experience, project management, or equivalent experience. Must hold and maintain a valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) from the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions. If registered in another state, must obtain Kansas registration within one (1) year of hire.  

Preferred Requirements: Experience mentoring and supervising project engineers or engineering technical staff. Experience as a Project Engineer or Project Manager at a municipality or public works.
